Have you ever wanted to work for yourself, to sack the boss? To get paid what you are worth? Well I certainly did. I was sick of making other people rich. Working long hours while other people reaped the rewards. It was more noticeable to me as I worked in the haulage industry, for a family run company. Normally there was only the boss/ Director, and then there was me, the Transport Manager or Operations manager. I had worked hard all my life chasing fancy job titles on my business card - Operations Manager, company car, good salary, a feeling of importance, someone to respect; I had made my wife and mother proud “what does your husband do?” “ oh he’s the Operations Manager for a large haulage company” Sounds impressive doesn’t it? Nothing could have been further from the truth. In reality I was number one dogs body. The person to blame when something went wrong. If a driver had an accident - my fault. Diesel went up - my fault. Yard got broken into - my fault. You see what I learnt was the more important sounding the job title, the more rubbish you had to put up with. Yes I can hear you saying’ but that’s what you got paid for’. Wong again, my salary was only about £4000 per year more than the driver got paid. I worked more hours. Was on call 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. Answering all the alarm calls, and generally taking all the flack for every bad situation until the day came when a friend offered me a way out. A chance to Sack the Boss
A time for change
